Security After the assassination
Security of Obama
Today President Obama and the First Lady Michelle Obama are protected with the most advanced technology to which they are the safest President and First Lady. The two will ride in their limo which they nickname, “The Beast.” “This highly customized Cadillac built on a truck chassis. Like its automotive predecessors, “The Beast” boasts bulletproof windows and run-flat tires. The president and his fellow passengers are fully protected from potential chemical and biological attacks” (Kessler). When they exit “the Beast” there are counter assault teams that are waiting standing armed with fully automatic Stoner SR- 16 rifles and flash bang grenade for diversionary tactics. If they spot anything they look like a threat they will react appropriately. Not only are there these counter assault teams that are with them but also if you watch on TV you may catch a glimpse a man’s black silhouette. These are armed men with SIG Sauer P229 pistols on top of buildings watching and ready to snip if necessary.
Role of Protecting the President
Secret Service members pledge to take a bullet for the President and are at constant risk. The Secret Service averages ten threats a day against their protectee’s, but usually they are against the president. “To ensure that an attack on a protectee – called an AOP – does not take place, the Secret Service uses a range of secret techniques, tools, strategies, and procedure. One of those tools is the extensive files the Secret Service Protective Intelligence and Assessment Division keeps on people who are potential threats to the president” (Kessler).
Security Today
The Secret Service has grown to such a big part of our security in America. We trust these people to keep the most important people in our country safe. They are well-respected and highly honored for taking on such a job. They are willing to take their life for our president. The Secret Service has shown such growth in America as a country.
Since John F. Kennedy there has been the changes that America needed to see in security so that such a terrible event will not happen again to our country. The changes that have been made since the John F. Kennedy assassination are so drastic that an assassination seems much more difficult to conspire. The security is extremely more advanced and is continuously improving from each visit. The changes they are making are saving our presidents lives and making it safer for others.
Due to the advances in technology, the Service has new and more responsibilities they must be accountable for. “In general for protective visits teams of Secret Service personnel travel in advance and conduct site surveys, which assess leads for manpower, equipment, hospitals, and evacuation routes for emergencies. Fire, rescue and other public service personnel in the community are alerted” (How Protection Works). Before the protectee arrives to the destination a leading advanced agent will coordinate all the law enforcement representatives that are going to participate in the visit. All information is discussed and emergency options are outlined. Preceding the arrival of the protectee there are checkpoints that are established and minimal access to the secured area is available.
While the visit is taking place the Secret Service and the local law enforcement have formed a network of support for the members that are working in closeness with the protectee. “A Secret Service command post acts as the communication center for protective activities, monitors emergencies and keeps all participants in contact with one another. After the visit, agents analyze every step of the protective operation, record unusual incidents and suggest improvements for the future” (How Protection Works).
